Keep all letters, hyphens, and suffixes when comparing part numbers. In the Mercury Mariner reference list below, 8390M and 9508M should not automatically be treated as equivalent to 1383-8390M and 1383-9508M.

What's Included

Check the supplied components before planning your repair.

  • Carburetor (included)

This item is a replacement carburetor and does not include a separate carburetor rebuild kit. Contact XR Marine if you need confirmation on any additional mounting hardware or gaskets before ordering.

Installation Guide

General installation overview. Follow the service manual for your exact engine and carburetor configuration. Fuel-system work requires the appropriate skills and precautions.

  1. Verify Part Match: Before starting work, compare the replacement carburetor against your existing unit and engine identification plate to confirm the mounting flange, fuel inlet orientation, and throttle/choke linkage points match.
  2. Prepare the Engine Safely: Shut off the engine, allow it to cool completely, disconnect the spark plug lead to prevent accidental starting, and shut off or isolate the fuel supply in a well-ventilated area away from open flames or sparks.
  3. Document Connections: Take clear reference photos or notes of the fuel hose routing, throttle linkage, choke linkage, and fastener arrangement before disassembly.
  4. Remove the Existing Carburetor: Drain residual fuel from the float bowl into an approved container, carefully detach the fuel line and control linkages, and remove the mounting bolts per your Yamaha service manual.
  5. Inspect Mating Surfaces: Check the intake manifold mounting surface and fuel hose condition. Ensure the sealing surfaces are clean and free of old gasket material, cracks, or debris.
  6. Install the Replacement Carburetor: Position the carburetor on the mounting studs or bolts, reconnect the throttle and choke linkages, and secure the fuel line with proper clamps. Check that the throttle and choke move smoothly through their full range without binding.
  7. Check for Fuel Leaks and Test Run: Restore the fuel supply and inspect all connections for leaks before starting. With the outboard properly supplied with cooling water, start the engine and perform any idle or mixture adjustments strictly according to the factory service manual. Shut down immediately if any fuel leak or abnormal operation occurs.

Before You Order

A careful fitment check helps you choose the right part the first time.

  • Match the full engine model designation on the identification plate.
  • Check the individual year entry and any serial-number or version restrictions.
  • Compare the complete OEM reference number, including its suffix. Horsepower or appearance alone is not enough.
  • Confirm the package contents and the quantity needed for your repair.
  • Verify that your engine is a 1994–2002 Yamaha 4M or 5M 2-Stroke model, and keep all prefixes and suffixes intact when comparing numbers (do not automatically treat 8390M or 9508M as equivalent to 1383-8390M or 1383-9508M).

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this product and its application.

Is this product a complete carburetor or a carburetor rebuild kit?

This product is a replacement carburetor unit, not a carburetor rebuild or repair kit.

Which Yamaha outboard engines does this carburetor fit?

It fits listed Yamaha Outboard 4M (4 HP, 2-Stroke) and 5M (5 HP, 2-Stroke) models from production years 1994 through 2002. Always check the individual year listing and match your complete carburetor part reference before ordering.

How should I compare the Yamaha and Mercury Mariner reference numbers?

Compare the complete part number, keeping all letters, hyphens, and suffixes intact. Note that references 8390M and 9508M should not automatically be treated as equivalent to 1383-8390M and 1383-9508M.

Can I select this carburetor based only on my engine being 4 HP or 5 HP?

No. Horsepower alone is not sufficient to confirm compatibility. You must match the full model designation (4M or 5M), two-stroke configuration, production year (1994–2002), and your existing carburetor reference number.

Does this carburetor require adjustment during installation?

After physically installing the carburetor, connecting the linkages, and verifying there are no fuel leaks, you should follow the official service manual for your specific Yamaha outboard model to check and set idle speed and mixture under proper cooling water conditions.

What shipping and warranty policies apply to this order?

XR Marine offers free shipping on all orders with no minimum order value, along with a lifetime warranty covering product quality defects (normal wear and tear is excluded).
