Installation Guide

General installation overview. Follow the service manual for your exact engine and carburetor configuration. Fuel-system work requires the appropriate skills and precautions.

  1. Verify identification and part match: Before disassembly, check the engine identification plate for model E40G, E40J or E40 and compare the existing carburetor against the new unit, including mounting flanges, fuel inlet orientation and linkage connections.
  2. Prepare a safe workspace: Shut off the engine, allow it to cool completely, disconnect the battery or disable the ignition system as specified in your service manual, and shut off the fuel supply in a well-ventilated area away from open flames or sparks.
  3. Document routing and linkage connections: Take clear reference photos or label all fuel lines, throttle linkages and choke connections so each attachment point can be restored accurately during reassembly.
  4. Remove the existing carburetor: Relieve any residual fuel pressure, catch draining fuel in an approved container, disconnect the fuel hose and linkages, and unbolt the old carburetor following the sequence in the Yamaha service manual.
  5. Inspect the mounting surface: Clean the intake manifold mating surface carefully without scratching the metal, and check that all sealing surfaces and fuel hoses are clean and free from cracks or debris.
  6. Install the replacement carburetor and reconnect linkages: Position the carburetor on the mounting studs, tighten fasteners evenly according to your service manual specifications, reconnect the fuel line securely, and verify that throttle and choke linkages move smoothly through their full travel without binding.
  7. Prime, inspect for leaks and test with cooling water: Prime the fuel system and inspect all fittings and gaskets for any sign of fuel leakage. Only start the outboard with a proper cooling water supply connected, check idle and throttle response per the service manual, and shut the engine down immediately if any leak, sticking linkage or abnormal operation occurs.

Before You Order

A careful fitment check helps you choose the right part the first time.

  • Match the full engine model designation on the identification plate.
  • Verify your exact model configuration and check your parts catalog for any serial-number or version distinctions.
  • Compare the complete OEM reference number, including its suffix. Horsepower or appearance alone is not enough.
  • Confirm the package contents and the quantity needed for your repair.
  • Confirm whether your repair requires this complete carburetor replacement or a carburetor repair kit for servicing an existing housing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this product and its application.

Which Yamaha outboard models does this carburetor fit?

This carburetor is listed for Yamaha Outboard E40G, E40J and E40 40 HP 2-stroke models. Always match the complete model designation on your engine identification plate and compare your full OEM part number before ordering.

Is this product a complete carburetor or a carburetor repair kit?

This product is a replacement carburetor unit, not a carburetor repair kit. It is used when replacing the carburetor rather than rebuilding an existing carburetor body with internal service parts.

Why do I need to check the suffix on part numbers like 6F6-14301-00 or 6J4-14301-05?

Yamaha 40 HP 2-stroke carburetors use different prefixes and two-digit suffixes (such as 6F6-14301-00 through -06, 6F5-14301-00, and 6J4-14301-03 through -05) to identify specific carburetor versions. Comparing the entire part number, not just the 14301 middle group or engine horsepower, helps ensure the part matches your exact engine setup.

Can I order this carburetor based only on my outboard being a 40 HP 2-stroke?

No. Yamaha produced multiple 40 HP 2-stroke engine families with different carburetor specifications. You must confirm that your engine is an E40G, E40J or E40 and verify that your OEM carburetor number matches one of the listed references.

Does the carburetor require inspection and adjustment during installation?

Yes. Even when installing a complete replacement carburetor, you should verify throttle and choke linkage alignment, check for fuel leaks after priming, and perform any idle or synchronization adjustments specified in the service manual for your Yamaha E40G, E40J or E40 outboard.

What are the shipping and warranty terms for this carburetor?

XR Marine offers free shipping on all orders with no minimum order value. This product is backed by a lifetime warranty covering product quality defects, while normal wear and tear is excluded.
