Installation Guide
General installation overview. Follow the service manual for your exact engine and carburetor configuration. Fuel-system work requires the appropriate skills and precautions.
- Verify Carburetor Type & Prepare Safely: Ensure the engine is shut off and cool, isolate the fuel supply and ignition system per your service manual, and ventilate the workspace away from any ignition sources. Confirm that the installed carburetor is a Rochester unit requiring base gasket reference 27-64692 rather than a MerCarb carburetor.
- Inspect Mating Surfaces & Compare Gasket Profile: Note the routing of fuel lines and throttle/choke linkages before lifting the carburetor per service manual procedures. Remove old gasket material from the carburetor base and intake manifold mounting flange without scoring the metal, and compare the new gasket ports and bolt holes directly against the mounting interface.
- Reinstall & Check for Leaks: Position the mounting gasket at the carburetor-to-manifold interface, reinstall the carburetor and linkages according to factory service manual specifications, and restore the fuel connection. Pressurize the fuel system to inspect for any fuel seepage before starting, and only test-run the engine with proper cooling water supplied, stopping immediately if any fuel leak, vacuum leak, or linkage binding occurs.
